چکیده

Fibreoptic and video technologies are widely used for airway management. Fibreoptics have been used in most airway intubation devices, including rigid laryngoscopes and in the tracheal tube wall itself. 22 Optical stylets, which incorporate ̄exible ®breoptic imaging elements in an intubation stylet, have now also become available. More than 10 new optical stylet devices have been introduced since 1995, which shows that combining viewing capability with the familiar handling of a stylet is an appealing concept (Table 1). But are these useful tools? Are their clinical performances similar or is one best? We survey the evolution of optical stylets, describe their properties, summarize their clinical performance and describe an ideal system.

Evolving challenges and opportunities for difficult airway management guidelines.

Airway management is a key competency for every anesthesiologist. In 1990, Caplan et al. reported that 34% of anesthesia-related claims were related to airway management. Since that time, several national airway management guidelines have been published with the aim to establish and promote safer airway management practice. Since the publication of those guidelines, studies have shown a decreas...

A comparison of the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine versus propofol target-controlled infusion for sedation during fibreoptic nasotracheal intubation.

Fibreoptic intubation is a valuable modality for airway management. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine vs target controlled propofol infusion in providing sedation during fibreoptic intubation. Forty patients with anticipated difficult airways and due to undergo tracheal intubation for elective surgery were enrolled and randomly allocated into the dexmedetomidine g...

The i-gel Supraglottic Airway as a Conduit for Fibreoptic Tracheal Intubation - A Randomized Comparison with the Single-use Intubating Laryngeal Mask Airway and CTrach Laryngeal Mask in Patients with Predicted Difficult Laryngoscopy.

Fibreoptic intubation through a supraglottic airway is an alternative plan for airway management in difficult or failed laryngoscopy. The aim of this study was to compare three supraglottic airways as conduits in patients with at least one predictor for difficult laryngoscopy. The i-gel was compared with the single-use intubating laryngeal mask airway (sILMA) and CTrach laryngeal mask in 120 ad...

Comparison of the Berman Intubating Airway and the Williams Airway Intubator for fibreoptic orotracheal intubation in anaesthetised patients.

Sixty patients with no clinical indicators of a difficult airway were selected to undergo a fibreoptic assessment after induction of general anaesthesia using both the Berman Intubating Airway and the Williams Airway Intubator. The bronchoscopic view and ease of railroading a tracheal tube during fibreoptic orotracheal intubation were studied. The bronchoscopic views obtained by the Berman Airw...
